A Hip-Hop's Tale: Remy Ma vs. Nicki Minaj

Media outlets have been reporting non-stop about the inevitable beef between two of the most talented women in hip-hop: Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj. Here’s what you need to know about their beef, what it’s done for hip-hop and who to follow.

How It Started:

Back in 2004, Nicki came at Remy over her track Dirty Money, where she says “Tell that b**ch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown” while sampling one of Remy’s Terror Squad songs Yeah Yeah Yeah. Never one to be outdone, Remy dropped a freestyle over Nicki’s track Truffle Butter, rapping: “Yea, for the millions I will kill these pop hoes ain’t no one in these streets like me and potholes.”

On the Wendy Williams Show, Remy saNicki’s been trying to block her from performing at certain places, and that Nicki loved that she was incarcerated. This sparked when Nicki hopped on two tracks coming at Remy & Azelia Banks. The first song released was Gucci Mane’s Make Love, where she rapped: “Oh you the qu-e-e-the queen of this here? One platinum plaque, album flopped, b**ch, where?” The second track was Jason Derulo’s Ow, where she said “I gave these bi**hes two years, now your time’s up. Bless her heart, she throwin shots but every line sucks.”

This gave Remy more motivation to come back HARD, so she dropped her nearly seven-minute diss track “shETHER.” It was done in the honor of Nas’s diss track Ether, which was put out for fellow rap God Jay-Z nearly two decades ago.

Remy’s Hit & Miss + Nicki’s Response:

With #shETHER, the world was retweeting, reblogging and leaving comments on posts about the labeled Massacre. The track earned the title from the lyrics and the introduction. The crafty Boogie Down rapper linked the song out to her fans with the caption “‘You wanna see a dead body.”

Fans waited days for Nicki’s response, after Remy’s diss track, but the only thing that was posted on her Instagram was about Remy’s poor numbers for her EP All the Way Up ft Joe-- but it was deleted soon after. It’s said that Nicki’s punch lines were mediocre in her punchline-filled track No Frauds and not as hard-hitting as shETHER.

Others were impressed by the business behind the lyrics No Frauds EP has been playing non-stop on the radio since it’s release, while @shETHER can’t be played anywhere due to legal reasons. Nas has publically stated there was nothing he could do to stop Remy’s record getting canned, and while the streets are whispering we “overheard” that Nicki may be behind it’s quick downward spiral.

Remy released a follow up diss track entitled Another One, which didn’t receive the rave reviews as “shETHER.” Twitter critics described it as corny, and accused Remy of being thirsty for a response instead of waiting like everyone else. Nicki’s explanation for her delayed response is as follows: “The greats took three months to respond to diss records. Queens don’t move on peasant time. Queens shut down Paris, then drop hits on #QueenTime.” This left people rolling their eyes and leaving “Ls” under the rappers comments on her social media outlets.

Nicki’s Exes Are Super Messy

If you peep into Nicki’s dating history, you’ll notice that her ex-boyfriend’s can be as shady as females, and neither of them mind showing their distaste for her publicly. In shETHER, Remy rapped, “I saw Meek at All-Star, he told me you’re a** dropped. He couldn’t f-k you for three months because your a** dropped. Now I don’t think y’all understand how bad her a** got. The implants that she had put in her a** popped.” The Barbz & fellow rapper The Game were FURIOUS at Meek Mill for dishing the tea on Nicki. The Game even came at him directly on Instagram with a lengthy paragraph calling her ex petty for talking down on the woman who has clearly elevated his rap career.

Meek Mill may be Nicki’s most recent relationship, but he definitely wasn’t her first. As a matter of fact rapper “Scaff Beezy” was her producer, rumored ghost writer and boyfriend for over a decade. The Jamaican native and Nicki had called it quits after allegations of infidelities on both of their parts had surfaced. According to blogs, he flew beautiful women to her home, showered them in gifts purchased with her money, and spent as much time as he could thotting around while she was on tour. With the internet never leaving one side untold, reports said that Nicki cheated on Scaff with Meek. Whatever the reason, it left poor Safaree bitter. Since the release of the shETHER diss, Safaree has showed his support of the track calling it the most disrespectful record he’s heard in his life, and confirmed that he played a big role behind her success. Nicki has responded to all the shade by tweeting, “They all banned 2gthr to pull the Queen down. Ppl I spent yrs helping, lyin on me! But my pastor told me let the LIAR lift me HIGHER. “

Remy + Her Hubby Have Teamed Up!

After Nicki reunited with mates Drake & Lil Wayne to drop “#3PackFromPARIS,” papoose didn’t think it was fair. He has gotten in on the beef and plans on dropping a separate diss track featuring his wife going after all three Young Money. There has been talk all over social media about the duo coming together to BODY Young Money...this story is developing.

This Beef was GOOD for hip-hop.

Between the men wearing dresses, the mumble rappers and the ghost writers who have taken over culture, a lot of today’s youth haven’t witnessed true hip-hop in their era, until now. Hip-hop is about going bar for bar without sugar coating or filtering your message over a hot beat in your OWN words. Remy and Nicki brought it and we hope we see more in the future.
