KoreiJayde: One of the five founding ladies of Sigma Nu Lambda

Can you start by telling us which sorority you represent and when it was founded?

I’m #02 Queen Indomitable of Sigma Nu Lambda, Inc, and we were founded on May 25, 2016.

So SNL are fairly new. Are you one of the founders?

Yes, we are new and I am one of the 5 founding ladies.

Have you been in any other sorority prior to this one?

I was a big sister of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc before we split and began our own organization.

Why did you choose to create this new sorority instead of joining an existing sorority?

For me, it was becoming a part of something that was created from 100% originality; building something from the ground up and being a part of its very foundation, from the name, to the crest.

And what is it about your sorority that makes it different from the rest?

I know everyone says they're all about love and sisterhood, but I feel we are very different in that aspect and there are no egos, believe it or not. We love each other, and although we disagree, we are able to overcome what would break any other sorority apart. We trust each other and we each give our undivided attention and love to what we've created. No one is above anyone.

How have you created such bonds with one another in such a short time?

It’s not that hard. Honestly, sometimes, you just click with people, and that’s what we did. I met them through the other sorority and we all just bonded. We have shown our pledges that it’s ok to feel uncomfortable at first, because it’s always difficult meeting new people sometimes, but they all have opened up almost instantly.

Do you think your pledges will be a good fit to carry on in the sorority shaping it up to what you imagined it to be?

I know they will. The girls we have now worked so hard during pledgeship and it’s been fun to watch them grow and bond with us and their line sisters.

From your perspective, what does it mean to be a leader?

To me it means being just that, leading by example. It’s not hard to humble yourself and know that you are in that leadership position. It’s an honor to lead a group of women who share the same ideals and dreams

What about you? What is it about you that has what it takes over anyone else, over any other founder in any other organization?

I'm pretty much easy to get along with; I get along with anybody. I am patient with people and I'm usually that shoulder that everyone can lean on. I'm compassionate but very stern when it comes to working towards a goal.

Sounds like the combination of compassion and sternness is needed to be a leader. Why did you feel it was necessary to have 5 founders?

We didn't want to put all the responsibility on just one person. We all came up with everything together, so it was fitting for us all to share the responsibility. It may seem unorthodox, and we've caught a bit of flack about it, but at the end of the day, it works for us.

“We love each other, and although we disagree, we are able to overcome what would break any other sorority apart.”

Do you all share the responsibilities between one another or do you all have set responsibilities?

For the most part, we do have our own separate jobs and responsibilities but we come together and talk about everything and go from there. But the ultimate decision is upon the person that's "over that department". For example, I'm the event coordinator. When we have such events, everyone's input is involved, but ultimately, it’s my decision what events are done and what aren't.

Now many greek organizations come and go and tend to stick around just for a short period. How will you all ensure that SNL sticks around a long time?

That's very true; they don’t last and no one can say that they'll last forever. But with how we approach situations and the knowledge we do have on how to do things and how not to do things will definitely ensure that we're around for a while. The love I have for my sisters and what we have created and overcome, thus far, no one will ever come between that.

So it’s not really about how long you last but the impression you make on people?

We'd love to be around forever, don’t get me wrong. To me, overall, it’s about how you made people feel and how you've inspired them.

what have you learned from being in the Greek community and how have you been inspired?

I've learned that it is hard work and everything doesn't happen overnight, but communication and staying ahead of the game is how you best succeed. My inspiration to do well definitely comes from my experience with the previous organization I was in, and also seeing other sororities and fraternities that have done well and still are today.

Is there anything else you’d like to leave us with before we go?

I just wanna thank you for this amazing opportunity to interview with you and for the opportunity for us to get our organization out there. SWAN PRIDE FOREVER!!
