Kalii: Nu Theta Mu

Welcome Kali. Can you start by giving the readers an introduction with your sorority, your title and your line name?

My sorority is Nu Theta Mu. I am the Founder/Prez, Sr. Lioness Determined.

Are you all named Lioness instead of Senior Sister and Big Sister?

The founders have Lioness in there name, and the next line after us are the Queens.

How did that come about?

I have been really into lions and I found out the head female is called a Lioness. And since the founders are the heads of the pack, I felt we should be Lioness. Lioness also means queen.

Great. Can you give us a brief background of Nu Theta Mu (NTM)?

Nu Theta Mu was founded April 13th 2016, by me and my two daughters. We wanted to create a sorority that was different from the rest; drama-free and very open minded.

What are some of the challenges that you’ve faced while starting NTM as a new sorority?

Not to many people agreed with the pledge fits, and a few people believed we wouldn’t get far at all and that we would fall apart in a month.

“Putting together a sorority is a lot of hard work but very rewarding at the end when you meet new people and build relationships along the way. Not everyone will see eye to eye but try to find a common ground for everyone.”

Wow. That must have been tough. What advice can you give to someone who is considering starting their own sorority?

Not to listen to everyone. Believe in yourself and keep pushing, you will do fine.

Absolutely. Now I want to shift gears. NTM’s colors are coral, mint and gold. Can you explain how those colors were selected and what they mean to you as the Founder?

Coral means strength. Mint means growth. Gold means family. They are also really pretty together.

What are some of the values that a woman needs, to be considered suitable for NTM?

Some can have all three of the values that our sorority stands for but we also look at personality.

Do you use the Lion as a symbol or a mascot?

Both.

The Lion is said to symbolize wisdom, power, royalty, dignity, and courage. Which of those values are most important to you? and, why?

Courage is very important to me and everyone in the sorority because if I didn’t keep pushing for what I wanted, I wouldn’t be here today. That’s also how I got my line name.

Your motto is, “Sisters of Diversity Together as ONE.” It may be very self-explanatory, but for those who don’t know, can you give a brief explanation of what that means and why you chose it?

It means we all come in different shapes and colors, and we should come together as one and uplift one another.

How important is participation in the Greek community to you?

It’s very important to us because if we don’t stay active a lot of people will forget that we are even here. We plan to do events with other Greeks in the future.

That’s Good. Unity amongst all the organizations is something very important in the Greek community. Now, I want to talk a little bit about your personal development as Founder. What have you learned while being on your journey?

I have learned a lot. Putting together a sorority is a lot of hard work but very rewarding at the end when you meet new people and build relationships along the way. Not everyone will see eye to eye but try to find a common ground for everyone.

What advice can you give to a woman who is pledging or considering pledging with NTM?

Come with an open mind and be ready to make some new friends/sisters along the way.

How do you ladies determine who is a good fit for NTM?

We determine by how open you are with us during the interviews we have.

What is the pledge process like?

It is about bonding with your line sisters and the rest of us.

Does it require tasks that involves interacting with other organizations?

Yes. We have the ladies find other sororities and fraternities to ask them questions about their organizations.

Great! As we bring the interview to a close, is there anything you want to add that we may not have touched on?

Yes. We also have brothers, Nu Alpha Kappa Mu Beta Fraternity, that was founded by a good friend of mine, iBlacks.

That’s Great. I look forward to learning more about the Brothers of Nu Alpha Kappa Mu Beta. Hopefully, we have the opportunity to sit and speak with Mr iBlack at some point. Again, on behalf of Verve X Magazine, we want to thank you for your time and we enjoyed learning about the ladies of Nu Theta Mu. Good luck to you and the other ladies. We look forward to seeing more of Nu Theta Mu.
