Sigma Nu Xi: Rising From The Ashes

Luxxry, founder of Sigma Nu Xi, has had a turbulent journey among the Greeks. how has he overcome all issues? Verve X caught up with him as he revealed the reasons for both his separate from other Greek Organizations and his revamp of SNX. He shares his personal Greek experiences which has helped him mature, as he reassures us that SNX is back and better, and they are here to stay!

How did his journey begin? Luxx set off on his Greek journey in 2012 when he pledged Theta Sigma Phi and remained for a short period of two months. We questioned his short-run in TSP to which he expressed that he realized unfairness in the hierarchy, stating that “if you weren’t part of the founder’s family, you didn’t matter.” After much planning and hard work, he, along with a friend of his, set up Sigma Nu Theta. SNT ran for a year before merging with Sigma Delta Nu to become SNX. Originally, SNX was a co-ed organization but soon evolved into more of a male fraternity. Luxx stated that the reason for this was due to a dating controversy within the fraternity. At first they had a no dating rule, but that was quickly amended due to certain individuals wanting to date. This quickly became a very messy situation that caused a lot of drama. As the founder, he did not want his Fraternity with that type of reputation and decided that it would no longer be a co-ed organization.

What struggles did he face? Luxx’s journey in the Greek world has been a long one for which he is very proud of. Of course with every organization you have a few bad moments where you need to reanalyze what you have done in order for it to thrive. When he first started off, everything was great and they were still very much new to the Greek world, so people flocked to SNX to pledge with them. After a while they had the dating issues arise and had to remove one of the founders. Even with losing a valuable member of SNX, they didn’t let that bring them down or stop their mission. They continued to have minor issues with keeping members active and keeping a positive image within the Greek community. Luxxry states that unfortunately they still had those issues even after removing the founder and that led to many disagreements with other members and they chose to part ways. Over time, SNX had a few dry spells, power struggles, and petty arguments, but they pulled through all of those issues and kept on going.

How has he progressed? After analyzing the years of being in someone else’s organization and then creating his own, he decided to change his approach. He stated that he used to be such a hot head and was ready to drop anyone that did not follow the rules. Now, he takes the time to think of the impact such decisions would have on SNX if one person were dropped and has since come to the conclusion that issues should be discussed amongst the founders instead of him having the final decision. SNX has become a place where all members have a voice and can be heard instead of being a dictatorship. He believes in quality over quantity and to show that he truly believes that, he has only 10 members that are active. Everyone has their own role and is very talented. Some of these talents include developers, picture editors, video editors, etc. With members like that, they make great assets to what they are trying to accomplish. When they are not working to build up the fraternity, they have house bonding events, simple chill times, and weekly meetings even if they have nothing to discuss along with holding at least two public events and events that include other organizations. SNX has made a lot of changes including renewing their colors and their mascot. When asked what brought on these major changes, Luxx says, “It was time for something new. Being in the game for over 2 years, things get old. It’s good to remain appealing. Our colors remained the same, but our mascot is now a phoenix. We decided to make the phoenix our mascot because the phoenix rises from the ashes and we feel as if SNX has risen from our ashes.” With all of these new changes, one tends to wonder what the future holds for SNX. He believes that they are starting to get their fire back and his goal for SNX is to be the people’s choice, meaning that he wants it to be the one that everyone wants to join. He wants their members to be active, loyal, and always hungry for more. He loves people that do not wait around for a command and who don’t just join for the title or a jacket.

What makes SNX stand out from the rest? Luxx explained what makes SNX different from other Greek organizations, “We’re a family. I don’t know what other Fraternities are doing or what they preach, but I do know we are truly brothers even outside of SNX, we are still brothers’ period. I try to make SNX feel like home.” In final thoughts, Luxx says that they must really stick to what they believe in. There are a lot of people that are out to take SNX down and he has been a victim of that, but he guarantees that it won’t happen again. He stated that if SNX has any sort of bad reputation that it is all bulls**t because he says that everyone always comes back. He knows a few founders of organizations that are currently active who can vouch for what he says and stated that he is certain that he will see them again soon as members of his Fraternity. He adds that maybe at that time that is what is best for them and that he won’t beg anyone to stay, but he does let them know where home is depending on the terms they left on. Luxx’s proudest moment of SNX was the moment they made two years as he is aware many people did not expect to see them make it that far.

What does he advise? As far as advice for the newcomers into the Greek world, he suggests doing their research before joining an organization for the looks or the numbers. He also suggests using patience and discernment when making a final decision regarding joining Greek organizations. In terms of creating their own organization, Luxx advises against it. According to him, there are too many great organizations to join and originality is running low.
