Mental Illness: You're Not Alone

Help Your Loved Ones

Nobody likes to admit to having a mental illness; it is often something people sweep under the rug to save face. However, you are not alone and you should never feel like you have to hide what you are going through from anyone, especially not from people you love. Most people, especially younger people, are going through the exact same thing. According to research, about 20 percent of U.S. are affected by some type of mental disorder during their lifetime. For young people between the ages of 10 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. These deaths can be prevented by proper health care, joining support groups, and some people turn to religion to help them cope. However you choose to deal with your problem, please don't ever consider suicide as an option. We highly consider calling your local social services office to get treated for depression and mental illness. If you need to speak with someone immediately call this hotline: 1-800-273-8255 - it’s open 24 hours a day for U.S. residents only. As far as IMVU goes, there is a group dedicated to helping raise awareness for mental illness which can be found here.

5 Things You Can Do

1. Jam out to some music. Put in some headphones, block out the world and zone out to your favorite playlist. 2. Try yoga or meditation. It may sound cliche, but there are some pretty good meditation routines that work for many people. If you are unsure on how to mediate, YouTube tutorials is a good start. 3. Find a hobby. Whether it’s drawing, writing, video games, dancing, cooking, or reading a book. Find something that helps you escape your negative thoughts and keeps your mind occupied. 4. Talk to someone. Venting to someone about your problems can feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Having a deep conversation can make you feel better and give you a better understanding of what you’re dealing with. 5. Get out of the house. Sometimes being idle makes your depression worse. Make a plan to get out of the house at least twice a week; that way you always have something to look forward to.
